The Goal of Johari Window
The final goal of Johari Window is to enlarge the open area without revealing information that is too private. As open area is the most essential quadrant in the Johari Window and the more people know each other the easier they can work together cooperatively, productively and effectively.
The process of expanding open area is called "self-disclosure" and it can be seen as give-and-take process which is between an individual and people that they are interacting with. When an individual share the information that he/she have, the open area will be expanding vertically, hence the hidden area will get smaller. On the other hand, when an individual provide comments to other members about what they see and know, the open area will be expanding horizontally, hence the blind area will get smaller. Besides that, unknown area is able to be reduced through self-discovery or observation by providing comments from other members and counselling is also an effective way where it will create an effective communication. People who have big open area will be easy going (very easy to talk to), where they communicate openly and honestly with other people and they often get along with the group. On the other hand, people who have smaller open area will be very difficult to talk to, they look very closed off and most of the time, they do not work well with the group as they are not trusted. Johari Window is really useful where it provides a visual reference that might be used by people to look on their characteristic and it also explains the importance of being opened, sharing and accepting comments from others.
