Hidden Area (Facade)
This area is known as the hidden self or hidden area or avoided self/area or facade. This window is where people keep personal information to themselves and not revealing to other people. There are various reasons to why people would want to keep personal information: the information is personally sensitive, therefore a person would not like to share it openly, or the employee feels that there is not enough trust or safety to do so. However, the employee might share relevant information depending on the company's culture, whether it is built on trust and respect or not. Sharing these information could be beneficial for both the employee and the company.
Some relevant information should be moved into the open area through the process of 'self-disclosure' and 'exposure process'. By revealing one's feelings and other information, the hidden area can be decreased and open area can be increased. This will enable better understanding, cooperation, trust, team-working effectiveness, productivity; and reducing confusion, misunderstanding and poor communication which contributes to poor team effectiveness. Yet, the information, personal feelings, issues confessed and to whom it is shared to should be completely upon the decision of the person. As for the feedback, some people are more open and willing to accept comments, but some are not. Therefore, care needs to be taken while giving feedbacks to a person to avoid emotional upset.
